Make the most of Indonesia’s beauty with a trip to one of these beaches.
With around 18,000 islands making up Indonesia there are too many beaches to count. There are swathes of shores that remain unspoilt. So if you fancy sampling a different side of Indonesia than the usual tourist haunts consider one these beaches.
1. Pink Beach, Lombok.
The island of Lombok is often overlooked thanks to its big sister Bali. However Lombok is becoming the focus of attention due to its less developed persona. It is littered with beaches and is one of the launching points for the car free islands of the Gili Islands. But for those who like a bit of an adventure head to Pink Beach on Lombok. Aptly named thanks to its pink sandy beach which is not a result of an Instagram filter. Not only is it unique but it lacks the tourist attractions of busier beaches providing the ideal place to explore the waters that are adorned with pretty reefs.
2. Perancak Beach, Bali.
Think of a Bali beach and I am sure Kuta and Seminyak spring to mind. Popular beaches in their own right but if you are wanting something a little more authentic then head to the west coasts of this surfers’ paradise island. Perancak Beach is known for its turtle conservation efforts. If the conditions are right you can watch turtles hatch their eggs on the beach. Additionally the beach is home to a string of colourful wooden fishing boats that are influenced by Arabian heritage. Pick the right time of year and you will fortunate enough to watch the annual boat race take place here.
3. Pulau Hatta, Banda Islands.
If you really want to get off the beaten track then make the trip to the Banda Islands. These 10 islands make for some of the most picture perfect setting that Indonesia has to offer. Plus the snorkelling and diving is like no other particularly on Pulau Hatta. The pristine beaches on this island will never bore you and if they do, a whole underwater world awaits with vibrant coloured corals and shoals of tropical fish. This is the place to embrace the natural beauty of Indonesia at a very slow pace.
4. Batu Karas, West Java.
For those keen to nail one of Indonesia’s favourite pastimes, surfing, then head to Batu Kara on West Java. This pretty fishing village has become a mecca for those keen to sample out the gentle breaks over the forgiving sandy shores. Every day the locals flock to the beach to catch some waves or give lessons to the tourists. The swimming is ideal here with sheltered spots too but watch out for the local children who whizz past on their surfboards with impressive ease.
