Don’t let noisy neighbours upset your time at home with this helpful guide.
Having conflict with your neighbours does not make for a happy home. However with the increase of vertical living in property hotspots such as Jakarta means we are living on top of each other more than ever before. Higher quality buildings should have better sound proofing qualities, but should you hear your neighbour’s movements more than you wish it can become frustrating. But how do you deal with a situation when your neighbour has slammed the door one too many times or yet another all night party has taken place?
1. Talk and don’t ignore the situation.
To save the conflict from getting out of control the best thing to do is to approach your neighbour in a calm manner and explain the problem. You may find that they are not aware of the noise they are making and how it impacts you. Wait until well after the incident once you have a cooler head rather than approaching them to during their all-night party. In many cases this is enough to resolve the issue but how you approach the chat, will influence the outcome. Remember everyone has the right to enjoy their property so you need to make sure that your request is reasonable and you don’t jump in all guns blazing.
2. Take note.
Next you should start taking a record of the incidents of noise. This is in order to have firm proof of the situation and also gives you the chance to assess the severity of the noise. The latter being important as it could be that the frequency of the events isn’t as much as you may think. This proof can also be used later down the line should you need to take any further action.
3. Take it up with the management company or landlord.
The next stage of dealing with noisy neighbours is to speak with landlord and the management company. If you are renting speak with your own landlord in case they have a relationship with your noisy neighbours or their landlord. Most tenancy agreements state that you cannot make noise between certain hours so this may help with resolving the issue.
4. Last resort: consider moving.
Admittedly not the solution that you but a move may be on the cards if you cannot resolve the issue. Before you do this check in case your noisy neighbours are moving anytime soon to save you having to.
