4 lighting ideas for your home

Set the mood of your room by being clever with the lighting.

Head to any to any of Jakarta’s trendy bars or coffee shops and you will notice the real emphasis on their interior design to set the vibe. The environment is key in giving the place an identity to draw in the crowds. Look up to see that this attention to detail is also included in the lighting. In some cases the lighting is used as a central focal point especially in a bare industrial design. The lighting also defines the mood therefore its functionality is important too. If you are wanting to bring some lighting flair to your home, then consider one of the following options.

1. Think modern with designer pendants and bulbs.

For a really modern and minimal look pick a pendant light with an interesting cord and with just a bare bulb. Cord’s now come in a whole host of colours, some material, twisted and make the pendant far more exciting that a traditional plastic white one. Team it with a filament bulb and group in odd numbers to place over your dining room table. Or if you are feeling adventurous drape the cords from the ceiling in an unorganised fashion to create a real feature.

2. Picky a pretty shade.

This is a cheats way of changing your lighting with minimal effort. You just need to change the shade for an instant room lift depending on the style you want to go for. Pick a bold block colour oversized shade if you have the space or a chintzy flowery one if you are wanting a shabby-chic look. Shades need not be boring so hit your local shops to see what they have and make this the centre of your room.

3. Go grand with a chandelier.

A similar concept to a shade, a chandelier can be another real show off feature. Traditionally adorned with endless details and small features, today they are plenty of modern twists on the market to suit your style. Hallway’s are the ideal place for this centrepiece but also over a dining table too.

4. Be discreet with slick spotlights.

If you want your lighting to be more functional, rather than as part of a feature, pick spotlights but be clever with the bulbs you fit. You are likely to want bright white bulbs for the kitchen for food preparation but softer ones for the bedroom so you do not get drenched in light when reading in bed. Use dimmers to control their brightness and if you are an avid art collector spots are ideal as they can be positioned to highlight a particular area of the wall. Pick recessed spots the same colour as the ceiling for a minimal look and they are ideally suited for rooms where you already have some prominent features such as a feature wall or wallpaper.
