Get your home set for Halloween

Deck your home out this Halloween with these great party ideas.

What was once a traditional pagan festival, Halloween has become a global event. Celebrated on 31 October, many people throw Halloween parties as an excuse to get together with friends and family and to dress up. If you are hosting this year’s Halloween event then make sure your home is kitted out with a ghoulish theme.

1. Create a haunted front door.

Before your guests have entered your home you want them to feel in the mood. So start with your front door and add some eerie features such as fake cobwebs, skeletons, spiders or bats. You could even blast some creepy music to entice people in to really add to the scene.

2. Carve some pumpkins.

Halloween would not be complete without a carved pumpkin or two. Called ‘jack-o-lanterns’ this long tradition is believed to have originated from Ireland. Carving a pumpkin isn’t easy, so give yourself time and be sure you have a sharp knife to carve with. Home carving kits are available but you can carve any shape you want from a cat, scary face to even your favourite super hero. Place a candle inside and leave in a dark corner of your home or by the front door.

3. Fill a costume box.

Make sure that all of your guests are in the Halloween spirit with a box of scary costumes. You could set up a corner entirely to this with props for people to take photos on their phones too. You can add anything you like but think witches hats, comedy glasses, pirate hats. If you are feeling really creative fill them in a coffin shaped box.

4. Make scary food and drink.

The Halloween theme should extend to what you eat and drink. Concoct a pungent orange or green punch with some fake eyeballs swimming around. Whip up some food that looks too scary to sink your fangs into. You could carve a watermelon into an unwell face with other fruit coming out its mouth like it is being sick. Create fingers with hot dogs. Shape sandwiches into bats or ghosts. Check out the Internet for ideas and inspiration to get your guests’ taste buds tickling.

5. Don’t forget the lighting.

As well as playing some scary music consider the lighting you have too. You could replace your light bulbs for green and orange ones, or just dim the lighting you have and decorate your home with Halloween inspired fairy lights. Remember to show off those carved pumpkins too.
