Are you ready for your move?

Moving can be stressful so make it easier with these tips. 

We all make New Year’s resolutions. To get fit, to eat healthier or maybe it is to move home. After spending time searching for a property with Dot Property, it is just days until you are ready to move in. There is a lot to think about when moving. It is hard to remember everything so make sure your have this check list at the ready.

1. Is everything packed?

It may seem obvious but have you packed everything? Have you checked under the bed? On the top shelf in your wardrobe? Or even down the back of your sofa? Packing up and physically moving can be tiring and things inevitably get left to the last minute. So before you head out the door one final time, check every nook and cranny to make sure absolutely nothing is left behind.

2. Utility accounts.

In the haste of moving it can be easy to forget to close your current utility accounts or transfer them to your new property account. This could be for your electricity, water, television and telephone. Don’t forget to note down your meter readings and take photos of proof if needed.

3. Notified change of address?

Make sure your all of your services such as your bank and your phone provider have your new address. Plus make sure you leave your new address with juristic office or landlord of your previous home so that they can forward on any post to you.


4. Deposit.

Should you be moving out of a rented property you will need to arrange to get your deposit back. Check your tenancy agreement to see if it lists who is holding your deposit and then speak to your landlord or real estate agent to arrange for its return. Remember to leave your bank details with them should they wish to do a bank transfer.

5. Check the terms of your tenancy agreement.

Ahead of your move have a read through your tenancy agreement to check if there are any obligations that you need to adhere to as part of your move out. It could say that you need to make sure that the property is left clean or that you turn of any water heater once you have moved out. If in doubt check with your managing agent or landlord to ascertain what is expected of you, and to ensure the return of your deposit.

6. Meet with your landlord or managing agent.

It is advisable to meet with your landlord or managing agent ahead of the move to walk through the property. This is a chance to explain any fair wear and tear on the property, or look at any areas that you need to rectify before you move. Where possible also meet with them once you have moved out all your belongings to discuss the deductions, if any, from your deposit.
